Welcome to IIB5162, the elective one-semester, 3-credit-hour course, Introduction to Liquid Crystals, for photonics graduate students. The field of liquid crystals is multidisciplinary, requiring concepts and techniques from chemistry and physics at the very least and in some cases also demanding ideas from materials science, mathematics, biology and some types of engineering. While a good foundation in physics and basic knowledge of organic chemistry are prerequisites, this course covers the most important aspects of the physics, chemistry and materials science of liquid crystals for graduate students with no or little knowledge of the field. It should provide an introduction to the science of liquid crystals that allows more advanced books to be read with good understanding.
