This course aims to offer an introduction to sociocultural theories and their contribution to the current understanding of the second language learning process. We will explore key sociocultural perspectives on learning and development, such as Vygotskian perspective, communities of practice, second language socialization, and identity theories and use these theoretical perspectives to examine how sociocultural factors, such as identity, context, power, and relationships may affect second/foreign language learning experiences/outcomes. Organized as a seminar, the course aims to explore sociocultural theories and second language learning through readings, semi-structured discussion, self-reflection, and in-depth field experience.
