Freshman English I is an integrated course designed to develop students’ four English skills (listening, speaking, reading, & writing) with an emphasis on speaking and listening. In this course, students will: 。Identify listening problems and develop listening strategies and skills, 。Gain confidence in speaking and improve speaking fluency, pronunciation, and conversation strategies, 。Develop general reading skills, including word skills and comprehension strategies, 。Develop writing fluency by giving students opportunities to articulate ideas in short written passages (170-200 words). For example, students can respond to topics addressed in class through writing assignments that focus on content and expression of ideas, rather than the structure of the written English. This course is designed to help learners develop the language skills needed to achieve academic success. Students develop academic literacy skills through content, images and video from National Geographic. The vocabulary development skills and general listening strategies taught in class are the tools to help them achieve. Students also learn to use of complex sentences and clauses while studying different cultures around the world. This does not only stimulate students’ interest in English learning but also help them familiarize with the grammatical and lexical systems of language and improve their contextual knowledge in order to acquire syntactic and semantic competence. The listening materials used in this level are highly engaging and relevant to students’ experiences. The course aims to further reinforce students with essential listening strategies, such as understanding context clues, making inferences, taking notes, and summarizing. Teachers use 50% of English as the language of instruction and encourage critical thinking and interaction in and out of class.
