This course aims to study the interface interactions among morphology, syntax and semantics by concentrating on the syntax and semantics of the Taiwanese Southern Min u-V construction. Issues discussed include the change of argument structure, gradability and measurement across categories. First, we will discuss previous studies on the middle constructions and the Taiwanese Southern Min u-V construction. Second, Chierchia’s (1989) theory of argument saturation and Reinhart’s (1996) theory of argument reduction will be discussed. Then, we will have a brief introduction for the current development on theories of degree and measurement, especially Solt (2015) and Wellwood (2015). Finally, we will go back to the syntax and semantics of the Taiwanese Southern Min u-V construction.
