HOLIDAY (No Class)

Basics of effective science communication ‧ Connect with or sign up for related technology, including course google folder. ‧ We will build our personal and class resources for models of effective science communication. For each type, provide the recommendation on the class google document. Come to class prepared to share. o Written science communication (e.g. policy brief, blog, summary of an issue, book, newsletter, etc) o Oral science communication (e.g. presentation, movie, video, etc) o Find one social media account and follow it (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc)

Communicating science with individuals ‧ Come to class prepared to speak informally and briefly (maximum 2 minutes) about a topic in science, technology, or engineering that interests you. Assume your audience is intelligent but knows little or nothing about the subject.

Communicating science with individuals ‧ Come to class prepared to explain a topic in science, technology, or engineering to an individual. This could be a health related issue to patient and their family so they can make a decision, an environmental issue so that an individual can make an informed vote, etc.

Evaluating the quality of science communication on the internet ‧ Review the google sheet with the models of science communication. Come prepared to discuss how you know if those are or are not trust worthy sources of information.

HOLIDAY (No Class)

Foundations of talking about science for the public ‧ Watch some talks on the internet that communicate complex science information. Come to class with some ideas about what made them good or not good talks.

Talking about science: Preparation process ‧ Talk with your friends/family in English about a complex science topic. Share a story with them that will help them understand the issue better. Come to class prepared to discuss how it went.

Talking about science: On stage ‧ Come to class with a draft outline or storyboard of your talk.

Seeing is believing: Visualizing science for communication ‧ View the selection of visualizations before class. Reflect on what you think are effective elements of using visualization to communicate science. Write down your ideas for class.

Workshopping our talks ‧ Come to class prepared to practice giving your talk.

Foundations of writing science communication ‧ Come to class with a first draft of a one-page blog post about a phenomenon in science for a public audience.

Policy briefs ‧ Finalize your blog post based on feedback from the instructor and classmates.

Social media ‧ Come to class with a first draft of a one-page policy brief.

Rehearsal, wrap up, revisions ‧ Finalize your policy brief.

Final presentations

Final presentations and review of the course and learning.
