(1) To Equip Students with Knowledge of major American writers and their representative works (2) To enhance students’ ability in textual analysis and criticism in American literature (3) To engage students in critical thinking of contemporary canons and their context

(1) Plagiarism will result in failure in this course (2) Skipping the class for more than 3 times with no official approval or hospital proof will result in failure in this course. (3) Midterm and Final Exam: identification (title and author); analysis and interpretation (allusions, metaphors, images, or passage); essay questions---mostly based on what are highlighted in the class (4) Group Project and Presentation: each group is required to conduct a 25-minute English oral presentation. Grading will be based on group performance.
Grading: Class Participation, Discussion, and Quizzes: 15% (In the beginning of class every week, there is an open-book quiz based on your preview of text at home.) Group Project and Presentation 15% Mid-term exam: 35% Final exam: 35%
