This seminar course explores the key concepts and theories in the field of new media and communication technologies. Students will be learning the essential and trendy theories including technological determinism, cultural study, political economy of communication, interpersonal/group/organizational/intercultural communication, narrative/rhetorical criticism, and media effects. The readings are adopted from leading academic textbooks and eminent academic journals. Students are required to read weekly assigned articles and to write individual reflections. Students will be grouped into teams. Each week there will be two teams responsible for leading discussion and presenting commentaries; the other teams should be participating in the discussion. A final paper is required for the students to demonstrate their practices of the knowledge related to the course topics and materials.
