The main objective of this class is to explain to the freshman students the basic principles of atomic and molecular science, which constitutes the foundation of modern chemistry. The material is divided in three topic groups: 1. Quantum mechanics of atoms and molecules. 2. Modern theory of gases, liquids, and solids. 3. Basic principles of thermochemistry and thermodynamics. The material overlaps in large part with high-school chemistry but the depth of the exposition and mathematical level are considerably higher.
