In this course we will focus on disciplinary and interdisciplinary art and design practices of contemporary art production. This class explores the materials and techniques of surface, space, and time (2D, 3D, and 4D), as well as the connections and interplay of these areas. Core Studio integrates the formal with the conceptual, traditional with the contemporary, and makes visible a variety of approaches in current cultural production in order to foster the development of students’ emerging practices as makers and thinkers. Students should expect a fast-paced studio environment.

The elements and principles of design are the building blocks used to create a work of art. Elements of Art are the visual "tools" that artists use to create an art work - they are what makes up an image or an art object: line, shape/form, value, color, space, and texture. Principles of Design are the ways artists use the Elements of Art in an artwork - this is "what we do with the Elements" - how we arrange them, how we balance them, what is being emphasized, etc. The principles are: balance, contrast, repetition, emphasis, and unity. Conduct extensive research on any of the elements and principles of design, and present corresponding artists and artworks that demonstrate your chosen elements and principles. Be prepared to verbally present your research for at least 10 minutes in the form of Microsoft PowerPoint (or in other presentation tools) with at least 20 pages of slides. Every PPT needs to include bibliography and citation in MLA format with at least 5 different sources. 2 of your sources need to originate from school library collection. Do not use Wikipedia as a reliable source in this research. The oldest known appearance of 2D art is on walls in the Grotte Chauvet, where the earliest recorded cave paintings appeared. With the advent of the computers, the screen has been functioning as essentially a cave wall of sorts- a canvas. In this project, consider two-dimensionality and the different forms that it can take. How can you convey an idea, tell a story, or ask a question without an object that occupies actualized space? In addition, we challenge you to reflect on the analog and digital two-dimensionality and their simultaneous co-existence. How has the computer, and more recently, the internet effected two-dimensional art making and how has our perception changed through time as well? Create an interactive installation that requires the viewer’s participation. Consider how the piece is dependent upon the viewer’s interaction for full realization of the work. Make 3 detailed sketches in your sketchbook. Your sketches should represent 3 different directions for your project. Then, prepare small swatches of materials you intend to use in your project; these material swatches need to come from actual materials you will utilize. Research other artists working with installation, interaction, and interactive installation. Detail what elements and principles of design you will be using in your project with notations in your sketchbook. Your installation must require interaction and participation.
