This course aims to prepare students for conducting research that is publishable in a graduate-level peer-reviewed journal. Students will engage in a series of exercises and activities designed to gradually develop skills and practices essential to conducting research, including but not limited to: knowing and "feeding" one's interests and motivations through active research (reading, note-taking, organizing references and research materials); learning the steps to producing a research essay; learning to think actively and creatively to stay ahead of the curve and avoid merely following trends passively; mastering powers of observation; discerning fallacies and learning to challenge and surpass existing scholarship. The course schedule is minimal. We will also include many in-class group activities and cover numerous topics not listed. For instance, we will also read very short literary works (songs, poems, flash/short fiction); analyze art works and films; engage in new/social media research; and discuss topics in critical theory (with excerpts from key thinkers) in ecological studies, postcolonial studies, deconstruction, Alain Badiou, and others.
Only open to graduate students within our department (or undergraduates planning to continue into our graduate program).

Grading Criteria Contribution to class discussion and leading discussion on selected assigned readings: 25% Presentation on original topic: 25% Research methods preparation assignments: 50% Attendance: -2 from final grade for each unexcused absence.
