概述

This course is aimed to provide an introduction to solid state physics. We start from the periodicity of crystal structures to build up the reciprocal lattice on which static (crystal binding) and dynamic (lattice vibration) properties of atoms are described. Next we study electron models, band structure and how to distinguish metals, insulators and semiconductors in the band theory. Finally, we concentrate on semiconductors and the semiclassical theory of conduction in metals. Topics of current interest will be given throughout the course.

We use Google Classroom to contact, discuss, deliver handouts and submit assignments

1. Homework and Assignments, Exams and Quizzes, Evaluation and Grading Policy: We will have 2-hour lecture and 1-hour practice with TAs each week. During the course, about 7 assignments are delivered to students. Students may use both analytic and numerical calculations in the course. Midterm exams will be written exams. Final exams can be either written or oral exams. * Grading Policy: - Assignments and Attendance: 25% - Midterm Exams: 30% - Final Exams: 45%
