In this course we will study one of the major authors in British women’s tradition of the novel, Jane Austen. Four of her novels will be closely read in terms of their social and historical context. We will focus especially on issues such as gender, class and colonialism as represented in Austen’s novels. Along with the literary texts, film adaptations and variations of Austen’s works will also be studied and analyzed.
