The course is designed to improve students' English writing ability to an academic level. Students will review concepts of a paragraph and an essay and be guided to write an English research paper. Specifically, students will 1. review the structure of a paragraph and an essay and learn to use appropriate information to support their arguments; 2. learn to locate information and evaluate the sources; 3. explore issues related to academic honesty such as plagiarism, paraphrasing, and citation; 4. complete a short research paper with support and guidance; and 5. orally present their own research.

1. Attendance 10% Absences from class cannot be an excuse for missing important announcements or late assignments. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you have missed (e.g., check E3 or get notes & handouts from peers). 2. Summary and Reflection 20% Throughout the semester, students will write ten entries of summary and reflection on news articles that interest them. Please see a specific guideline on E3. 3. Essays 20% Each student will write at least 4 essay assignments during the semester. Students will participate in several pre-writing activities, which will be graded together with the final draft of the essay. 4. Research Paper 30% At the end of the semester, students will submit a research paper. Students will complete several assignments (e.g., brainstorming research topic, annotated bibliography, and research paper draft 1) before the final research paper is submitted. 5. Midterm & Final Exams 20% Please see the course schedule for the midterm and final exam dates. If you need to reschedule an exam date, you need to present a valid proof and inform me at least one week in advance. Otherwise, no make-up exams will be given.
