This course provides a foundation of solid mechanics with applications to science and engineering. The main objective is to determine the stress, strain, deformation of solids and structures withstanding forces. The theories are established on three fundamental concepts, including equilibrium, geometry of deformation, and material behavior.

Basic theory of axial deformation, statically determinate and indeterminate structures, thermal effects, force method and displacement method, inelastic axial deformation.

Physical deformation and assumption, non-homogeneous shafts, statically determinate and indeterminate problems, power transmission shafts, thin-wall torsion members, inelastic torsion.

Flexural stresses in beams
Strain-displacement analysis, flexural stress, design of beams for strength, non-homogeneous beams, unsymmetric bending, inelastic bending.

Definitions, parallel-axis theorem, product of inertia, transformation of moment of inertia, principal moment of inertia, principal directions.
