Course Objectives: The objective of this course is that students will be introduced to and become familiar with the mechanical behavior of structural members subjected to a variety of different loading situations (axial tension, compression, shear force, torsion, bending and combined loadings). By the end of the semester, students will have acquired the skills necessary to determine the internal stresses and strains or displacements of structural elements under different loading conditions and apply these skills to achieve the optimum design of various structural members. Major Topics: Chapter 1: Tension, Compression, Shear Force Chapter 2: Axially Loaded Structural Members Chapter 3: Torsion Chapter 4: Shear Force and Bending Moment Chapter 5: Bending and Shear Stresses in Beams Chapter 7: Analysis of Stress and Strain Chapter 8: Applications of Plane Stress
