• Michael Stuart: Philosophy for Scientists

  This is a class for science students to ask all the questions they can’t ask during lectures, tutorials and labs. For example, perhaps you are supposed to model a system, but you want to know what a model is, why we should trust them, and how models are different from theories and hypotheses. Or maybe you want to know when to run a simulation and when to run an experiment, and whether a simulation can ever be better than an experiment. Or perhaps you want to know how to build models and design experiments and simulations in the first place. Or you want to know when it is okay to approximate, idealize, and use abstractions, or what it is actually like to be a scientist, or how to know when you have enough evidence to stop investigating something, or whether science should always be perfectly rational (as opposed to, say, emotional), or whether science should always try to make the world a better place, or only seek the truth, or why scientific papers are written the way they are. We will explore all of these questions, in a free, open, and non-judgmental context. Evaluation: Students will be given a take home exam, and they will have one week to complete it and hand it in. The exam will have 4 questions, one related to the material from each week. Students will choose 2 of those 4 questions to answer. Each answer should be about 1 single-spaced (12-point font) page (about 500 words, 1000 words maximum). It is important that students state and argue for their own ideas in these answers. The point is not to do independent research and read lots of books and articles on a topic (though that never hurts!): the point is to reflect on, refine, and present reasons for, your own views on a topic.

• 蕭育和 ─ 現代政治、現代人與生命

  這個部分將與同學一起閱讀五個經典的政治理論文本,探究構成現代政治的根本框架,以及「現代人」的生命政治境況。 同學需要在課前閱讀指定文本,課程進行分成兩個階段,第一階段將由講師領讀;第二階段則期待同學的閱讀回饋及共同思辨討論。 課程的評分要求同學就閱讀文本的重要段落,撰寫評論論文。

  閱讀社會科學、文學的相關文本,探索戰後政治暴力對於台灣社會的各種影響。 一、 課堂討論。 二、 閱讀心得回饋。

• 勤定芳 ─ 反烏托邦小說:想像與真實的映照

  這個單元的教學內容將聚焦在三部反烏托邦小說:阿道斯・赫胥黎的《美麗新世界》(1932)、喬治・歐威爾的《1984》(1949),以及瑪格麗特・愛特伍的《使女的故事》(1985)。我們將一起討論這些反烏托邦的文學經典,以及相關的影視作品,映照出當代社會中哪些社會、政治問題。 本單元的課程目標為培養學生的批判性思考;邀請學生思考我們身處的社會可能以何種方式、在哪些制度層面變得失調。透過相關文本的閱讀與討論,同學將思考這些文學敘事所勾勒出的反烏托邦世界,呈現了什麼樣的問題與危機,進而思辨我們要如何在所處的世界追求更美好的生活。 請同學務必在每週上課前預習教材,並完成相關的準備。 1.個人課堂出席與參與(30%): 根據當週的指定文獻與授課內容,授課教師將設計相關的活動,修課同學需於課堂上參與。 2.小組課堂討論(30%): 針對每週的指定文獻,教師將提供題目請同學進行小組討論。每組將於討論後進行口頭分享,並提供簡要的討論文字紀錄。 3.分組口頭報告(40%): 口頭報告的主題為反烏托邦影視作品之分析。修課同學將於本單元第一週完成分組、選定負責報告的影視作品,於第四週課進行口頭報告。
