This course aims to enhance students' critical English reading abilities and develop more formal discussion skills based on critical reading and reference source materials. Students will have in-class quizzes every class. However, you don't have to regurgitate the text, as a novel study is more than that. This novel study will allow you to develop your reading comprehension and thinking skills, which is an opportunity for you to build a love of reading. During the lecture, you will be reading and discussing with your team members, which can create a shared experience that makes connections. Apart from reading novels, the course offers extra reading materials, which are contemporary issues. Students will read a variety of text styles with enhanced fluency following coherent and effective use of reading strategies. 本課程內容為小說閱讀,選取之讀本為「大亨小傳」,書中描寫1920年代的美國,反映當時社會的靡爛與人性的真實面。同學須於每次上課閱讀指定章節,並與組員一起回答與章節內容相關之題目(facts)或衍伸之問題(opinions),每堂課亦會補充非小說類的其他閱讀教材,並練習單字與文法句型。
This course has no specific prerequisites.

The instructor will give background information on each chapter to help you visualize and understand things that you have never experienced. Even if you have encountered a similar experience, the book might look at it from a different perspective. After reading the assigned chapter, you will have the chance to carry on an intellectual conversation with peers and develop good communication skills. 1. 課堂講授,小組討論或相關主題影片學習,聆聽指定廣播節目或文章閱讀並回答問題。 2. 每次上課須完成課堂作業,並於課堂結束前繳交,批閱完畢後分數會登錄於E3。 3. 同學須配合事項: 自行準備筆記本,列印課堂講義並自備耳機。
