由於實驗動物對人類生活各層面的貢獻以及其對生物醫學研究領域的重要性已無庸置疑,而當使用實驗動物已成不可避免的趨勢之時,如何合理使用、善待實驗動物、使其承受最少的傷害與痛苦,以確保實驗動物有優良的生活品質及人道的結束生命,是「動物保護法」尊重動物生命及保護動物的核心精神,也是近年來行政院農業委員會管理實驗動物使用、強調動物福祉的主要依據。 本課程為生物科技學院「實驗動物模式模組化課程」之一,前半部份將介紹動物福祉及動物權的核心觀念與其歷史演進,探討在兼顧動物實驗的品質與動物福祉的情況下,如何確保實驗動物能有優良的生活品質及人道的結束生命,包含在設計動物實驗時應掌握的替代(Replacement)、減量(Reduction)、精緻化(Refinement) 3R原則,以及在實驗進行中使動物免於饑渴、免於恐懼、免於身體不適、免於痛苦傷害和疾病、表現自然行為等五大自由(5 Freedom),並介紹動物保護法對實驗動物相關的法規規範,以避免違反動物福祉事件的發生,進而幫助學生建立面對實驗動物時尊重生命(Respect)及負責任(Responsibility)的正確態度及觀念。另一方面,精進實驗動物操作技術是研究人員重視動物福祉的積極具體展現之一,本課程後半部份的實習操作,讓學生親自操作麻醉、手術、評估疼痛、人道終點時機、並進行安樂死等,期望使學生具備及熟習實驗動物的基本操作技術,並加深其對於動物實驗及動物福址的體會。
不限,歡迎對實驗動物有興趣或將來可能進行動物實驗的同學選修。為確保學生於實習課程能確實習得動物實驗操作技術,本課程每班以10人為限。
