Compared to ecocriticism, which generally practices a stronger commitment to realist epistemology, ecofeminism has had to defend itself against accusations of essentialism from wary feminists since its introduction in the 1970s. As a result, ecofeminism has developed with a greater regard for drawing out complicated entanglements between material realities and ideological frameworks. Into the new millennium, inquiries into women-nature relationships have broadened with diversity via approaches of deep ecology, vegetarianism, biodiversity, new materialism, care ethics, participatory epistemology, queer theory as well as explorations from interdisciplinary and cross-cultural perspectives. This course will cover ecofeminism's major commitments and ideologies, with particular focus on its exploration of and investment in human-animal relationships. Course content includes both critical materials and literary texts.
