The concept of learner autonomy stresses learners’ active role in the learning process. Research has identified that autonomy plays an essential role in successful language learning. This course is designed to introduce students to theoretical concepts, pedagogical practice, and current educational policies and reforms related to autonomy. We will learn about how the concept of autonomy interacts with those in education theories such as learning strategies, self-regulation, motivation, and individual differences. We will also examine autonomy in different language learning and instructional contexts including formal and informal ones. Through readings, discussion, presentations, and projects in this course, students will learn to construct environments (e.g., courses, learning modules, learning communities) and develop materials that foster and support language learners’ autonomy.
