This course is designed to introduce students to efficient and safe hazardous materials (hazmat, or dangerous goods (DG)) transportation. Topics covered include general introduction to freight transportation, hazmat, and a variety of hazmat transportation risk assessment methodologies. These include hazmat risk management framework, qualitative, semi-quantitative, and quantitative risk assessment techniques, structuring decision problems, transportation-mode-specific and intermodal risk assessment methods for highways, railroads, aviation, pipelines, inlands waterway, and hazmat transportation security. The course focuses primarily on freight and hazmat transportation, but the methodologies taught can be adapted to passenger transportation and such applications will be discussed as well. Upon successful completion of this course, students are expected to be equipped with comprehensive knowledge of hazmat transportation and fundamental risk assessment techniques, which enable students to perform mode-specific and multimodal hazmat transportation safety and risk analyses. Please note: this course will be taught fully in English.

The whole course will be taught fully in English. The course materials will be taught by the instructor via weekly lectures, supplemented by in-class practices and discussion, journal paper study, homework assignments, and exams. A few guest lectures can be expected from outstanding scholars and practitioners in the field of hazmat transportation.
