This is a course to apply the theoretical framework of industrial organization and regulatory economics to study the technology industries. We particularly tackle on high technology industries, biotechnology industries, and network industries. We first introduce the theory of industrial organization and regulatory economics, and then analyze how global environment and national policy may affect the industry. The topics will be applied to explore business strategies of enterprises, industrial development and competitive advantage for the targeted industries. The objectives of this course are for students to 1. Understand the themes in the interdisciplinary studies of economics, IO, strategic management, innovation management. Through the lens of strategic management, technology management and industrial organization, students will learn to think systematically and strategically about achieving competitive advantage. 2. Examine the role of technology and innovation in shaping corporate strategy for competitive dynamics in a global environment to formulate the Technology-Innovation-Entrepreneurship frameworks. 3. Additional empirical studies are provided to explore how Asian resourceful firms compete against their counterparts in the global market. 4. Be well equipped to do research in this area. The course is taught using a combination of lectures, journal and book chapter reading, case analysis and class discussion.

Grading Schemes: Your score in the course will be based on the following: (1) Class preparation and participation (30%) (2) Group assignment (30%) (3) Individual term paper, including - Midterm proposal (Group discussion and meeting) (10%) - Final presentation (10%) - Final paper (20%)
