Contamination of land and groundwater is an increasingly serious problem facing environmental and geoenvironmental professionals nowadays. The adverse and harmful impacts of soil and groundwater contamination are long lasting and the environmental damage may even be irreversible. Therefore, proper management of contaminated land and groundwater is vital for the protection of public health and sustainable development of mankind. However, management of contaminated land and groundwater is a complex and multi-disciplinary subject spanning across politics, public administration, socio-economics, sciences etc. The primary objective of the course is to provide graduate students with exposure to the different facets of contamination management, from prevention to remediation. At the end of the course, the students who fulfill the requirements of this course should be able to understand the importance, considerations, objectives and strategies of contamination management, to delineate subsurface contamination, to quantify the transport and fate of contaminants in the subsurface, to understand available technologies for remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater, and to develop plans for proper management and/or remediation of contaminated land and groundwater. Each student is required to select a relevant topic of his/her choice to perform independent research and to present his/her findings in a term paper written in English following the format of a scientific journal of his/her choice. The best papers may be invited to present at seminars of the Institute of Environmental Engineering. The term paper will be due at the final examination.
