Writing is a social practice. It should be closely related to literacies in the real world. The course, framed by genre-based approaches, aims to help you raise your awareness of genres, identify and analyze the conventions and audience in different genres, and develop writing competence and use appropriate skills responding to specific genres. In this course, you will experience various types of writing tasks that you may encounter or will encounter in the real life, including email writing, academic writing, online writing, discipline-oriented writing and writing for instruction. You will learn how to respond to these writing tasks with adequate content, conventions, formats, words, grammar, and mechanics. It is expected that by the end of the course, you will be able to 1. identify the purposes, audience, and conventions for different writing tasks, 2. analyze the essential components of different writing tasks, 3. choose appropriate words and styles to fit into writing tasks in different genres, 4. use effective writing devices to improve logic and the flow of your writing, 5. diagnose your own common writing problems/errors, 6. reduce the common writing problems in your writing, 7. give constructive comments on others' writing; 8. work pleasantly and collaboratively with others, and 9. raise awareness of how to express meaning through multimodal elements
This course is set for students at CEFR B2 level.
