This course introduces students to representative western plays in twentieth century literature. Classroom lectures and discussions will primarily approach the plays as literary readings, although students are at liberty to venture into the creative arts and theatrical performances for their final projects. In class, we will situate the plays in relation to historical, social, cultural, and theoretical developments of the twentieth century. We will start with dramas that explore problems of hysteria, group mentality, and gender roles, and then proceed to plays that probe into complications of feminism, homosexuality, and East-West relations.
