Poetry is generally viewed as the most important literary genre of the Romantic period of Great Britain (1785-1830). The poetical works of this period provide evidence of the scale of this era’s remarkable artistic development. Their impact was universal. This course will provide our students with a general introduction to the major Romantic poets (including Blake, Burns, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley and Keats), their works as well as the cultural and social background of the period.

This course offers our students an opportunity to study the major poetical works of the British Romantic period. Through the course, students will be equipped with specialist knowledge in studying, exploring and enjoying the poetical works of the period.
Student Group/Weekly Oral Report: 20% --- A short introduction about the life of the poet and his works (10 minutes) --- Read out loud the poem(s) and explain to the class the main theme of the poem(s) (10 minutes) Paper: 50% One critical paper (800-1000 words) to be submitted at the end of the term. The assignment will require both literary and historical critical research and reference to sources. All references (including bibliography and footnotes) should be either MLA (American) or MHRA (British) format. Single spacing, Times New Roman x12, A4 paper. Please submit the hard copy of your paper to the lecturer; at the same time, upload the work to e-Campus. Plagiarism is strictly forbidden (those who plagiarize will get no credit from the course). Attendance: 30% Please ensure that you e-mail the course lecturer with a written request for leave of absence at least one day in advance of that date.
