This course covers the basic theories of single crystalline solids encountered in contemporary electronic industry. Designed for the first-year graduate students or upper division undergraduates of engineering or applied science majors, it starts with the crystal structures, chemical bonding, and electronic band structures of solids, especially semiconductors, followed by the quantum theories of thermal, electrical and optical properties that are characteristic of these materials. The theories will be applied to real-world problems in semiconductor fabrications and testing. There will be computational projects for students to learn to calculate the band structures of semiconductors and analyze the obtained results, from which they are hoped to understand the interplays among atoms, crystal structures, electronic band structures, energy bandgaps, density of states, carrier concentration, effective mass, mobility and the general performance of transistors, diodes, and their comprising materials, including 2D materials and their heterojunction structures.
