Welcome to PTIB30004 (formally IIB5116), the elective one-semester, 3-credit-hour course, Introduction to Liquid Crystals, for photonics graduate students. The field of liquid crystals is multidisciplinary, requiring concepts and techniques from chemistry and physics at the very least and in some cases also demanding ideas from materials science, mathematics, biology and some types of engineering. While a good foundation in physics and basic knowledge of organic chemistry are prerequisites, this course covers the most important aspects of the physics, chemistry and materials science of liquid crystals for graduate students with no or little knowledge of the field. It should provide an introduction to the science of liquid crystals that allows more advanced books to be read with good understanding.
General Physics, General Chemistry, Engineering Mathematics (and, preferably, Electromagnetics, Optics)
無備註
The course consists of 14 three-hour lectures, one midterm exam (M), and one final exam (F). Each exam, lasting 110 minutes and consisting of four to six questions/problems, will cover the material discussed during the weeks since the previous exam. (This means that the final exam is not comprehensive.) Both of the exams will be of open-notes or a typical closed-book test. No make-up exams will be given! Details about other matters such as the change of the tentatively scheduled lecture will be given in class at the appropriate time. You are responsible for being present and understanding that information.
Midterm: 40%; Final Exam: 60% (Final numerical grades will be determined on a curve.)
