This course aims to help students understand how linguistic and social issues are reflected in popular culture. Through discussion of popular movies, music, dramas, and TV shows, this course will explore how language is used to reflect social relationships, identities, and cultures in popular materials. Students will be asked to utilize linguistic and sociology concepts learned in class for discussing the pop culture examples and how the language used in pop culture reflects social and cultural issues. By learning the important issues in sociolinguistic use and integrating them into pop culture, this course will train students to apply cultural analysis to understand the relationship between language, culture, and society. Furthermore, the teaching goals include cultivating students’ critical multilingual awareness (CMLA) in various aspects: multilingual cognition, multilingual attitude, multilingual expression, multilingual sociality, and multilingual power. Based on the above dimensions, one or two related popular culture video materials will be utilized every week so that students can understand how multilingual languages are used in the environment and society. By analyzing multilingual situations in popular culture videos, students can have opportunities to experience issues related to the use of multilingualism in a multilingual environment, so as to enhance students’ critical multilingual awareness.
