This course is a general introduction to ancient and classical Greek philosophers from the sixth to the third century BCE. Open to graduate and undergraduate students, we will survey the West’s earliest development of metaphysics, ontology, epistemology, ethics, and reasoning by exploring the ideas of Parmenides, Plato (Socrates), and Aristotle. There is a primary focus on metaphysics, philosophy of mind, and epistemology. This background will enable students to contextualize subsequent responses to Greek thought that have shaped the development of philosophy for the past 2400 years in the West. The course has four main objectives: (1) students acquire a broad understanding of Western philosophy during the ancient and classical periods, (2) students can discuss the development of Western philosophy as an ongoing dialogue started by the ancient Greeks, (3) students recognize the main branches of philosophy covered by each thinker, including metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic, and aesthetics, (4) students are able to analyze one of the main branches of philosophy introduced by a single thinker or comparatively.
