This course aims to cultivate each student’s fundamental ability to perform jazz improvisation and ensemble playing. Based on the foundation of swing rhythm, students will learn to apply scale and harmony theory, read jazz chords and related modal scales, blues, and jazz minor melodic structures. The course includes practice in harmonic voicing techniques, common bass and drum patterns, leading toward a deeper understanding of the logic behind jazz style composition, arranging, performance (especially small ensemble), analysis, and production.
(1) Sight-reading ability: staff notation and basic chord symbols (e.g., C, Am, etc.) (2) Basic music theory: familiarity with intervals and major/minor scales (3) Instrumental performance ability: able to play the keyboard (recommended level: Classical period sonatina) or proficiency in another instrument (e.g., guitar, bass, drums, saxophone). To maintain the learning quality of all students, the first class will include an interview to strictly confirm keyboard and music proficiency. If you are uncertain about the above standards, please email the instructor with your learning background for further consultation.

First class interview to confirm proficiency. Each class divided into theory session (first half) and performance session (second half). Students must bring staff paper and notebook. Toward the end, focus on group ensemble. Each group selects its own jazz standard, and every student must improvise on their chosen instrument. Online platform will be used for file sharing, announcements, and messages. Students must actively log in and take responsibility for any missed information.
