This course introduces graduate students to research methodologies used in second language research. It covers quantitative and qualitative designs, mixed methods, and classroom-based research. Students will learn about common data collection approaches and understand concepts about research validity, reliability, and ethics. They will also learn to read and critically evaluate published studies. Through lectures, readings, presentations, assignments, and in-class discussions, students will develop the ability to: 1. read published research articles and critically evaluate them; 2. formulate researchable questions based on issues that interest them; 3. select appropriate research designs and data collection methods; 4. design their own research; 5. present their study and write up a research proposal following academic conventions.
