Course Description: 1. Fourier transform (FT) ‧ Forward and inverse FT ‧ Fourier transform properties ‧ Correlation and convolution ‧ Discrete Fourier transform (DFT) ‧ Comparison of Fast Fourier transform (FFT) and DFT ‧ Fortran programming on FFT 2. Filter design ‧ Ideal filter ‧ Butterworth filter ‧ Gaussian filter ‧ Fortran programming on Butterworth filter 3. Seismic noise classification ‧ Tidal and ocean wave ‧ Wind and other anthropogenic sources (traffic, explosion) ‧ Turbulent flow ‧ Bedload transport 4. Application of time frequency analysis (focus on geohazards) ‧ Location method for landslide ‧ Seismic model for turbulent flow ‧ Seismic impact model for bedload saltation Why Fortran? ‧ Easy to learn ‧ Many aspects common among computer programming languages ‧ Programming is effective to improve your understanding (it is impossible to write a code without proper understanding) Objective: This course provides a comprehensive introduction to Fourier transform properties and filter design, and builds a solid foundation of skills to progress on to the advanced analysis of time series data. Next, the course gives a brief introduction of time-frequency analysis such as S-transform and wavelet transform, and shows a comparison of wavelet transform and FT method in the time-frequency plane. Based on the aforementioned knowledge, this course further focuses on the concept of seismic monitoring of landslide and river sediment transport, and its current developments and implementations in Taiwan.
