概述

(Please check the course website for the updated syllabus and schedule: https://bit.ly/nycu-social-computing-1142) This course considers the broad design space of technology and software systems that aim to foster social interaction beyond the individual. The modern landscape of social technology has expanded to support communication and interaction among people with whom we have various types of relationships - from family, friends, co-workers, acquaintances, to complete strangers, people with shared and different interests and opinions. Furthermore, almost all of our work-related collaboration and cooperation is mediated through technology. Technologies that facilitate social connections include social media platforms, messaging apps, such as Facebook, BeReal, Threads, Discord, Slack, and Dcard. These apps adopted different design elements including algorithmic recommendation systems, response (e.g., like, comment, repost, remix, ) and audience management features (e.g., "close friends"), and supporting different content modalities (e.g., text, image, video). There is also a growing tendency for apps that traditionally focus on instrumental needs like tracking physical activities, managing finance and transactions, or listening to music to embed social features that are designed for engagement and social support goals. As social technologies have changed the way we interact and connect with others, the advancements have led to both opportunities and challenges, such as privacy-related issues and online harms. How do we design social computing systems to be effective and responsible? This course covers emerging topics related to the modern landscape of social computing system design, including the design spaces of application and platforms, the foundational social scientific and technical knowledge that underpins them. You will engage in activities to learn about core concepts, and practice and apply them through working on assignments and group project designed to help gain hands-on experiences for understanding current issues within the field. At the end of this course, you should be able to: - Relate social scientific and technological concepts to the design of social computing systems - Describe canonical intellectual agendas of CSCW and Social Computing, and articulate how a new paper in the space contributes to one or more of the agendas. - Identify how the design of social computing systems may generate potential social benefits and harms. - Make a scholarly contribution to the field of CSCW and Social Computing, and relate the topic to your own research interests.
