This 18-week course introduces students to basic principles and emerging concepts in stem cell biology and the clinical applications of stem cells. The course aims to provide students with a foundation that will enable them to investigate the therapeutic application of stem cells in different tissues and organs. Intended Learning Outcomes (1) To identify ESC, iPSC, and adult stem cell (2) To explain the protocols of cell preparation and transportation (3) To illustrate at least three ongoing clinical cell therapies/trials and cell therapy regulation in Taiwan (4) To compare the advantages and disadvantages among ESC, iPSC, and MSC (5) To describe side effects of clinical cell therapy (6) To design a clinical trial (final presentation and written assignment) (7) To appraise the clinical trial designed by other classmates

There will be no exams. Your grade will be derived from the quality of your written assignment and oral presentation, and your participation in class. One group oral presentation, one personal presentation and one written assignment. Oral presentation and written assignment grading 1. What are the unmet clinical needs? (30%) 2. What kind of cell therapy did you design in this trial? (iPSC/ ESC/ MSC/ cell-derived products?) (Cell source and how to prepare?) (30%) 3. What are the advantages of cell therapy in your design? (Compare to traditional treatment and other cell types) (20%) 4. The intervention protocol and how to follow the patients? (20%)
