概述

This seminar surveys the metaphysical lineage of Idealism, tracing the tension between the universe conceived as a closed mechanistic system and an open, vitalistic organism. It examines how the metaphysical lineage of Idealism in Western thought traces the recurring philosophical attempt to bridge the gap between Thought (the concept, the subject, the logical) and Being (nature, the object, the real). Rather than assuming a fixed definition of idealism, the course investigates the dynamic historical struggle to articulate a "unity of the world" as a unified system in which the estrangement between the knower and the known is overcome. We begin with the ancient roots of this inquiry in the Platonic identity of Being and Intellect, moving through the inward turn of early modernity, where the locus of reality shifts to the Subject. We consider the rise of Absolute Idealism in the 19th century (Schelling, Hegel, British Idealism), which sought to overcome the "one-sidedness" of both subjective idealism and mechanistic realism by positing a self-determining, infinite whole. The final third of the course places these historical systems in dialogue with contemporary challenges. We will examine how 20th-century phenomenology, quantum mechanics (Bohm), and theories of artificial intelligence re-stage the old idealist questions: Is the universe a collection of dead matter, or is it in some sense a concrete universal—a living, intelligent, or informational whole? By the end of the seminar, students will be able to: 1. Analyze the "Identity Thesis": Critically evaluate the fundamental idealist premise—tracing back to Parmenides and Plato—that "to be is to be intelligible," and that the structures of thought must mirror or constitute the structures of reality. 2. Distinguish Varieties of Idealism: Articulate the nuanced differences between Subjective Idealism (reality depends on finite minds), Objective Idealism (reality is a rational structure independent of us), and Absolute Idealism (reality is a self-differentiating unity of subject and object). 3. Interrogate the "Absolute": Examine how thinkers from Spinoza to Bradley have conceptualized the "Whole" or the "Absolute" to solve the problem of relations and the fragmentation of the finite world. 4. Evaluate Contemporary Relevance: Assess whether modern developments in physics (holomovement, entanglement) and technology (virtual realism, AI) signal a return to idealist ontology or a definitive break from it.

Foundations — The Demiurge and the Hypostases • Topic: The intelligible paradigm vs. the sensible realm. We contrast the "Craftsman" (Demiurge) of Plato with the non-discursive emanation of Plotinus. • Key Concept: Emanation vs. Construction. Is the world made by a mind (Dualism) or is it the overflow of a mind (Monism)? • Primary Readings: ◦ Plato: Timaeus (27d–53c) [The Demiurge and the Receptacle]. ◦ Plotinus: Ennead V.1 (On the Three Primary Hypostases) and V.8 (On the Intelligible Beauty, §1–6).

第 2 週

The Interior Turn — Augustine and Descartes • Topic: Moving the "Idea" from the cosmos into the subject. Augustine theologizes the Plotinian ascent; Descartes establishes the "Archimedean point" of the Ego. • Key Concept: The Cogito. The shift from the "Great Chain of Being" to the certainty of subjective self-presence. • Primary Readings: ◦ Augustine: Confessions (Book VII, x.16–xvii.23; Book X, selections on Memory). ◦ Descartes: Meditations on First Philosophy (I & II).

第 3 週

The Closed System — Spinoza and Leibniz • Topic: Rationalism. Spinoza’s Substance Monism (Deus sive Natura) as a self-contained, deterministic system vs. Leibniz’s windowless Monads. • Key Concept: Substance vs. Monad. Is the universe a single block or an infinite plurality of perspectives? • Primary Readings: ◦ Spinoza: Ethics, Part I (Definitions & Props 1–15). ◦ Leibniz: The Monadology (Complete).

The Critical Turn — Kant • Topic: Reinstating the "Transcendent Unity" as unknowable. Kant limits reason to phenomena, leaving the Thing-in-itself as a problematic concept. • Key Concept: Transcendental Unity of Apperception. The "I think" must accompany all representations. • Primary Readings: ◦ Kant: Critique of Pure Reason (B-Preface; Transcendental Aesthetic §1–8; B-Deduction §15–27).

第 5 週

Vitalizing the System — Herder and Boehme • Topic: The critique of the "Closed Circle" of mechanism. Herder reinterprets Spinoza’s static substance as dynamic Kraft (electromagnetism/energy). Boehme introduces the dark, irrational will (Ungrund) into God. • Key Concept: Kraft (Force) & Ungrund (Abyss). The transition from static Being to dynamic Becoming. • Primary Readings: ◦ Herder: God: Some Conversations (Selections on Spinoza and Force). ◦ Jacob Boehme: Selections on the Ungrund and the "Dark World" (wrath/fire).

Nature and Spirit — Schelling and Hegel • Topic: Schelling synthesizes the Timaeus, Herder, and Spinoza: "Nature is visible Spirit." Hegel dialectically overcomes the "fear" of the Spinozistic substance through social recognition. • Key Concept: Naturphilosophie & Recognition. • Primary Readings: ◦ Schelling: Ideas for a Philosophy of Nature (Introduction) OR Late Schelling on the Ungrund (Freedom Essay selections). ◦ Hegel: Phenomenology of Spirit ("Lordship and Bondage").

The Symbol and the Will — Coleridge and Schopenhauer • Topic: British Romanticism imports German Idealism (critique of the mechanical universe) vs. Schopenhauer’s pessimistic metaphysics of Will. • Key Concept: The Symbol. (Coleridge: The symbol participates in the reality it renders intelligible). • Primary Readings: ◦ Coleridge: Biographia Literaria (Ch. XIII on Imagination); "Kubla Khan". ◦ Schopenhauer: The World as Will and Representation, Vol 1, §17–29 (The body as Will).

The Linguistic Turn — Wittgenstein • Topic: The limits of language and the solipsistic subject. "The world is my world." • Key Concept: Linguistic Idealism. The limits of my language mean the limits of my world. • Primary Readings: ◦ Wittgenstein: Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (5.6–5.641). • Secondary: Richard Gaskin on Linguistic Idealism (The Question of Linguistic Idealism).

時數:[2026-11-18]程曉杰(3.00)
第 12 週

Process and Duration — Bergson and Whitehead • Topic: Replacing static "substance" with dynamic "process." Time as quality, not quantity. • Key Concept: Duration (Durée). Reality is a gnawing flow of novelty, not a spatialized timeline. • Primary Readings: ◦ Bergson: Creative Evolution (Chapter 1 on Duration). ◦ Whitehead: Process and Reality (Category of the Ultimate).
