The idea of Qi has been central in the Chinese intellectual tradition, and has been widely practiced in various domains such as Chinese medicine and martial arts. Nonetheless, it is both obscure and controversial in a contemporary context where requirements of meeting standards of objectivity have been imposed on all modern disciplines following the research paradigm set up by physics since the sixteenth century in the West. The aim of this seminar is to reconstruct the idea of Qi within the conceptual framework of analytic philosophy and interdisciplinary researches. By the end of this seminar, the prospects of Qi, whether it stays in a museum for the appreciation of the past only or reorients us toward invigorating directions in the future, shall be better assessed by the participants. This seminar is organized by three themes which will shape how we proceed with class meetings: I.Philosophical and historical: Daoist, Confucian, and Buddhist traditions II.Scientific and empirical: Wang’s wave-based meridians and Northoff’s spatiotemporal neuroscience III.Domains of practice: Chinese medicine, Arts and Chinese landscape paintings, Tai Chi Chuang, Divination and astrology In the first part of the seminar, we will read and discuss how the idea of Qi has been constructed and developed in three major traditions of Daoism, Confucianism and Buddhism through philosophical and historical lenses. In the second part, we will read and discuss how the idea of Qi has been explicated in a scientifically rigorous way by Wang, Wei-Gong 王維工through Fourier Transformation in mathematics, which is further developed by Kuo, Yu-Cheng 郭育誠 in clinical practices. We will also examine in what ways Georg Northoff’s ideas in spatiotemporal neuroscience may resonate with Wang’s approach and in what ways the two may diverge. In the third part, we will engage with the idea of Qi in practical domains where experts and practitioners in the areas of Chinese medicine, arts and Chinese landscape paintings, Chinese astrology and divination, and Tai Chi Chuang will be invited to class for active exchange and cooperation of theory and practice.
