概述

Cinema, a so-called time-based art, was created by the technology of capturing and reproducing images sequentially. However, it is not just a film’s content, but its very form that is involved in the production of images which are influenced by and reflect upon concepts of time. By considering cinema’s social functions and its very medium with a focus in cinematic devices, this course engages with thinking via cinematic devices and images related to temporality, consideration of time as linear or non-linear, homogeneous or heterogenous, and reversible or irreversible. Adapting an approach of close-reading of film texts and engaging with writings by such major theorists on temporality as Nietzsche, Heidegger, Bergson, Benjamin, Levinas, Deleuze, and Stiegler, concepts of being, love, desire, identity, memory, and revenge will be explored.
