[Course Description] This course introduces key concepts in the study of religion. It is divided into three parts, each concentrating on a different approach to what defines the wide diversity of religions. The course gives an overview of some of the most recent academic discussion on how to approach the study of religion. In doing so the course engages with a variety of issues concerning the definition of religion, what religious experiences are, and how religion is connected to the world. [Course Aims] The course aims at developing in students the abilities of critical judgement, analytical thinking, independent research, as well as effective written and oral communication. The course also seeks to introduce and discuss some of the key ideas enabling the study of religion. Involving and engaging students in the diversity of religious ideas and to reflect on the pluralism of religious and spiritual traditions and undertakings is also part of the aims of this course. [Learning Objectives] 1. Acquire a broad familiarity with key concepts in the study of religion. 2. Gain a general understanding of a variety of methods for the study of religion. 3. Develop the knowledge base and analytical skills to examine issues and engage with the academic discussion of key concepts in the study of religion. 4. Cultivate openness and curiosity towards the diversity of religious beliefs and the different ways of approaching religion. 5. Critically analyse evidence and arguments from a range of sources and synthesize knowledge and ideas in a clear manner, in speech and writing. 6. Conduct independent research, demonstrating reasoned arguments and thought, as well as creativity and high quality of verbal and written communication.
