概述

Course Description: This course is designed to develop students’ advanced and academic reading, and discussion abilities and, more importantly, to foster critical reading and discussion of texts. In addition, students will learn to critically analyze a variety of daily-life texts. Reading topics will progress from familiar to more distant themes, including personal, social, sociocultural, environmental, and global issues. Personal issues may involve psychological well-being, entertainment, the use of social media, and the challenges posed by new technologies such as AI. Social topics include relationships, family, friendship, and dating. Sociocultural and environmental issues cover housing, economics. Global issues include cross-cultural communication on the internet, health care, and globalization. Course Objectives: 1. This course intends to develop students' general English proficiency at the B2 level. 2. The course content is predominantly academic and is designed to support the development of students’ academic English proficiency. 3. Students will develop the ability to comprehend sophisticated texts and will learn new vocabulary words and sentence patterns. 4. Students will strengthen their reading, academic reading, and discussion skills through continuous practice. 5. Students will develop the ability to identify and critically analyze authors’ viewpoints and arguments. 6. Students will enhance their ability to discern and discuss the underlying ideologies in texts. 7. Students will develop the ability to critically evaluate everyday texts, fake news, and information. 8. Students’ interest in reading and discussion will be promoted.

Pedagogy and Supplementary Information 1. This course adopts a critical approach to reading. 2. Students will discuss assigned readings through critical questioning and analysis. 3. Students will be exposed to multiple perspectives to examine texts from different angles. 4. Students will work independently through reading activities and collaborate with classmates through discussions and related activities. 5. Class discussions will incorporate multimodal formats, including oral discussions, role-playing, and other interactive activities. 6. Students are required to complete assigned homework and attend class punctually. Academic Integrity and Originality Originality is required for all writing assignments and projects. Academic dishonesty and plagiarism are strictly prohibited. Any student who violates these policies will receive a grade of zero for the assignment or project involved. For all writing projects, students may not: Copy from any English articles or books. Translate directly from Chinese articles or books. Include excessive quotations from English or Chinese sources. Direct quotations should not exceed approximately 20% of the total text. Proper citation and documentation of quotations are required. Ask others or AI tools to complete assignments on their behalf. Policy on the Use of AI Students may use AI tools to support their writing or any other work; however, AI should assist rather than replace the writer’s or presenter’s own work. Transparency is required when using AI in any writing or any other assignment. Students must clearly disclose how AI was used to assist their writing in all submitted assignments.

1. Midterm Exam (30%) 2. Oral Presentation on a Reading Inquiry Project (30%) This is a group project. Each group will select a topic of interest, discuss the topic and selected readings with the instructor, conduct extensive research and reading on the topic, and present the results to the class. Please refer to the attached presentation format. 3.Reading Portfolio (20%) The portfolio should include all class notes, assigned reading summaries or homework, artifacts, and reading materials collected throughout the semester. Students are required to scan and upload all of the above materials to the designated university website on a biweekly basis. If you use materials from any website, you must provide proper citations. For example: Retrieved March 1, 2003, from http://www.actfl.org/index.cfm?weburl:/public/articles /details.cfm?id=33 The citation should appear at the top of the first page. Failure to provide citations will be considered plagiarism. 4. Class Participation (Individual and Group Participation) (10%) Class participation will be evaluated based on the instructor’s observations, as well as peer and group evaluations. 5. Attendance (or Self-Evaluation) (10%) Regular and punctual attendance is required. If you are unable to attend class due to unavoidable circumstances, such as illness or emergencies, please provide appropriate documentation.
