This class introduces the history of sequencing technologies in terms of their thermodynamic and chemical reaction principles and the applications of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) with examples of the basic analysis. Several NGS strategies are covered, including whole genome sequencing, whole exome sequencing, RNA sequencing and metagenomics. Given that most of the NGS tools are Linux based, a taste of the Linux system will be given to students in the beginning of the course. Linux system and the scripting programming language R will be used in most of the examples.
