This course is designed to help students participate in everyday and academic conversations with greater ease and confidence. We will use TED Talks and other audiovisual materials to broaden our vocabulary, enhance our listening and speaking skills, practice note-taking, and engage in discussions about the issues they raise. Topics include global issues emphasized in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, such as climate change and environmental action, gender equality, and food security, as well as issues relevant to our discipline—such as language, literature, and communication. The course also includes a variety of in-class activities that encourage students to think creatively and express themselves. Students are expected to learn new vocabulary and carry on relevant conversations in English.

Attendance and Participation One point out of 20 will be deducted from your attendance and participation score for each hour of class missed without a valid excuse. Legitimate excuses include documented sick leave, official leave, mental health leave, and, in some cases, personal leave for unavoidable exams, interviews, or other responsibilities that cannot be rescheduled. Active participation is also critical. It includes attentive listening, preparation, and respectful contributions to class activities. Some topics may be personal or sensitive; students will not be required to disclose experiences or identities they prefer to keep private. Perfect attendance alone does not automatically guarantee a full 20 points. Quizzes There will be four quizzes throughout the term, and your highest three scores will count toward your final grade. Quizzes may assess vocabulary, main ideas, supporting details, and listening comprehension from the assigned materials. There will be no makeup quizzes. Since only your highest three quiz scores count, one missed quiz may be treated as the quiz score that is dropped. If you miss more than one quiz, any additional missed quiz will receive 0 points unless there are exceptional circumstances approved by the instructor. Preparation and Taking Notes Students are expected to watch or listen to the assigned materials before class and take their own notes. Whenever a recording is assigned, first watch or listen to it without consulting any accompanying transcript or written text. Take notes on what you hear. See how much you can understand. Then read the transcript or written text while watching or listening to the material a second time. Come to class ready to summarize the main ideas, share observations, ask questions, and participate in discussion. Midterm and Final Exams Each exam may include a short recorded speech, listening comprehension questions, and/or a written component. Detailed instructions and assessment criteria will be announced before each exam. Accommodations This course is committed to fostering an inclusive and accessible learning environment. If you require accommodations, please contact the appropriate campus services and inform me as early as possible. Together, we will ensure that you have the support and resources necessary for success. Use of Generative AI Before class, you may use generative AI to brainstorm topics, help prepare a speech or script, check the spelling or grammar of language you have written yourself, or practice pronunciation and conversation. In class or during exams, however, you may not use it to write a speech or script for you or generate quiz or exam answers. Any recording you submit must use your own voice; AI-generated or AI-cloned voices are not allowed. Final Scores Once your final score is ready, I will send a group email via E3. Shortly afterward, each of you will receive a personal email with a grade breakdown. If you have any concerns about your score, please contact me within 24 hours of receiving your personal email. If I do not hear from you, I will proceed with the final grade submission.
