This course offers a general introduction to linguistics, the scientific study of human language, with a focus on the sound systems of human languages. We will cover some core theoretical subfields of linguistics, namely phonetics, phonology, and morphology. We will also touch upon other subfields of linguistics, including historical linguistics, linguistic typology, and linguistic variation. This course is meant to be taken with Introduction to Linguistics II, which covers the remaining core subfields of linguistics. Learning Outcomes: - Understand and refute common misconceptions about language and linguistics - Transcribe the consonants and vowels of English using the International Phonetic Alphabet, as well as describe their articulation - Locate and describe patterns of sound distribution in data of various languages - Describe the structure of words and word forming processes - Reason about language change and language genealogy - Talk about the relationship between language use and social structures - Identify different writing systems

Textbook: The textbook for this course is Contemporary Linguistic Analysis: An Introduction by William O’Grady & John Archibald (9th edition, 2021, Pearson Canada, ISBN-13: 9780134652306), which is also the required textbook for Introduction to Linguistics II in the 2027 Spring Semester. You can use either the physical textbook or the e-book. Older versions of the textbook are also acceptable. However, be mindful of differences between versions with respect to chapter and section numbering. Office hours: For clarification or discussion of course material, you are welcome to attend office hours. Weekly instructor office hours are held in person in HC311 on Thursdays 12:00 – 1:00 (directly after class).
