This course offers an in-depth exploration of the English language, with a particular focus on its early historical development and the linguistic stages of Old English and Middle English. It examines how these earlier forms of English evolved over time and contributed to the development of modern English. Students will study the language of the Anglo-Saxons, including its pronunciation, grammatical system, and key syntactic structures. The course gradually introduces authentic Old English and Middle English texts, enabling students to engage directly with historical language data. Through a combination of readings, short texts, and online resources—such as the Old English Aerobics website—students will develop both a theoretical understanding of historical linguistics and practical skills in reading and analyzing early English. Particular emphasis is placed on the systematic study of grammar, including nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and word order. Students will also learn to use glossaries effectively and to interpret texts within their historical and linguistic contexts. By the end of this course, students will be able to: A. Identify key linguistic features of Old English and the Anglo-Saxon period. B. Analyze Old English grammar, including inflectional morphology and syntax. C. Read and comprehend selected Old English texts with the aid of glossaries and translations. D. Apply grammatical knowledge to analyze and interpret Old English passages. E. Identify key linguistic features of Middle English. F. Analyze Middle English grammar, including inflectional morphology and syntax. G. Apply grammatical knowledge to analyze and interpret Middle English passages.

• Regular attendance and active participation in class discussions are expected. • Reading Old English texts and Middle English texts in parallel with grammar study is strongly recommended to reinforce understanding.
