概述

This one-term, weekly course invites undergraduate students to explore the dynamic intersection of history and imagination through the lens of the British historical novel. By engaging in a close reading of canonical works by Sir Walter Scott, Charles Dickens, and Virginia Woolf, students will trace the genre’s evolution from the early nineteenth to the early twentieth century. The curriculum is designed to introduce students to the essential techniques and analytical skills required for the university-level study of historical fiction. Beyond broadening their understanding of English literature, the course focuses on fostering informed, critical reading and cultivating rigorous scholarly habits. Key academic components include: • Critical Research: Students will conduct literary and historical research, learning to synthesize primary texts with secondary sources. • Scholarly Writing: Mastery of professional citation standards, specifically MLA or MHRA formats, is a core requirement for all written assignments. • Presentation Skills: Through group oral reports and peer discussion, students will refine their ability to present complex literary arguments effectively. By the end of the term, students will not only understand how these authors reimagined the past but also how to navigate the boundaries between historical “fact” and narrative “fiction”.

Group Oral Reports (20%) Each group will deliver a 10-minute presentation to the class. • Materials: At the time of the report, students must provide a formal outline to the lecturer. • Handouts: A copy of the bibliography or reference list must be distributed to every student in the class during the presentation. Attendance & Participation (20%) Regular attendance is essential for success in this course. • Leave of Absence: If you are unable to attend, you must email a written request for a leave of absence to the lecturer at least one day in advance.
