Hydrology is the study of the earth's water - its movement, distribution, and other related qualitative and quantitative issues. The objective of this course is to introduce students to 1) the principles and processes governing the movement of water through the hydrologic cycle, including atmospheric moisture flow, surface runoff, infiltration, river routing, and groundwater flow; and 2) the quantitative description of hydrologic characteristics, including hydrologic measurement, hydrologic statistics, and frequency analysis techniques applied to problems of engineering hydrologic design. In class, students are expected to understand (1) the qualitative and quantitative description of the hydrologic cycle, (2) the infiltration process, (3) the surface runoff process, (4) the watershed precipitation runoff process, (5) one-dimensional reservoir and river routing, and (6) hydrologic statistics and frequency analysis.

Atmosphere Circulation, ENSO, La Nina, and Climate Change
Atmospheric circulation significantly impacts the hydrologic cycle. Anomalous atmospheric patterns like ENSO and La Niña alter the Earth's climate. Finally, describe the causes of climate change and its impact on our environment.
Precipitation
Explain the formation of precipitation, including its geographic effects on intensity and methods for estimating rainfall amounts.
Hands-on introduction of QGIS
Introduction to QGIS software and hands-on experience in a computer room to become familiar with its operation.
Methods to estimate infiltration
Introduce three methods for estimating infiltration from a practical engineering perspective. Examples will be provided in class for students to practice the calculation process.
Hydrograph and methods used to estimate discharge
Identify what a hydrograph is and explain the reasons for different patterns of hydrographs. Introduce multiple empirical methods to calculate discharge and draw the hydrograph for a watershed.
Probabilistic models used in hydrologic frequency analysis
Probabilistic models can be used in hydrologic analysis to determine return periods and design IDF (Intensity-Duration-Frequency) curves. In this context, students can practice drawing data on statistical paper and generating frequency reports independently.
Hydrologic modeling
Briefly explain the concept of modeling in hydrology, and introduce practical methods for reservoir and river routing.
Hands-on experience on HEC-HMS
Explain what HEC-HMS is and demonstrate its capabilities in hydrologic modeling. Students can learn to use the model in a computer room and apply it to complete a final report for a small watershed, focusing on the hydrologic cycle.

The hydrologic cycle is the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. It is crucial for sustaining life and ecosystems. How can we use a systems approach to conduct basic analysis?
