Course description and overview: This unit introduces fundamental knowledge of materials science and engineering. It aims to equip students with fundamental knowledge of the relationships between material structure, properties, and performance. The knowledge learned will provide a basis for the analytical skills necessary for materials design, selection, and processing. Learning objectives: At the successful completion of this unit, you will be able to: 1. Identify the main classes of engineering materials such as metals, alloys, and ceramics. 2. Analyse the macroscopic behaviour of engineering materials under the influence of atomic and microstructural features. 3. Identify the role of composition and structure of materials in their mechanical properties for engineering design. 4. Apply methods for modification of materials microstructure and control of materials properties.
