Grading Scheme The final grade for this course is based on a total of 100 points: 1. Regular Participation and Weekly Learning: 70 points 2. Final Group Oral Presentation: 20 points 3. Individual Final Learning Reflection: 10 points II. Regular Participation and Weekly Learning Each week, students may earn up to 6 points: Attendance: 3 points Weekly handwritten reflection: 3 points Students who attend class and complete the attendance check-in will receive 3 attendance points and will be eligible to submit the weekly reflection. The weekly reflection must be handwritten by the student, contain at least 150 words, and be directly related to that week’s class. It must be submitted to the teaching assistant by 1:20 p.m. on the following Wednesday. Each reflection is worth up to 3 points. Students who do not attend class may not submit the regular weekly reflection. However, students may complete a make-up assignment for each of their first three absences during the semester, as described below. Students who complete at least 11 regular learning records during the semester will receive an additional 4-point completion bonus. The calculation is as follows: 11 completed learning records × 6 points = 66 points 66 points + 4-point completion bonus = 70 points Students who complete at least 11 regular learning records may therefore receive the full 70 points for Regular Participation and Weekly Learning. The maximum score for this category is 70 points. A regular learning record may be completed either by attending class and submitting the regular weekly reflection, or, for one of the first three absences, by completing the required make-up assignment. III. Absence, Make-Up Assignments, and Unexcused Absence Policy The course recognizes that students may occasionally be unable to attend class because of competitions, university activities, illness, family matters, personal commitments, or other circumstances. Therefore, students may make up their first three absences during the semester. Students are not required to provide the instructor with a reason for these first three absences. 1. First Three Absences For each of the first three absences, the student must complete the required make-up assignment within two weeks after the missed class. The make-up options are as follows: 1. If the student misses class because of a competition, university activity, work, family matter, or another activity, the student may submit a handwritten reflection of at least 250 words on the activity, experience, or learning related to that absence. 2. In other cases, the student must select an online course, lecture, talk, or other complete learning activity that is related to the topic of the missed class and is at least 60 minutes in length. The student must then submit a handwritten reflection of at least 250 words, together with the title of the learning material and the complete URL. If the make-up assignment is completed satisfactorily and within the deadline, the student will be considered to have completed the learning requirements for that week and may receive the full 6 points: 3 attendance points and up to 3 reflection points. The completed make-up assignment may also count as one regular learning record. If the student does not complete the required make-up assignment within the deadline, the student will be considered not to have completed the learning requirements for that week and will receive 0 out of 6 points for that week. Completing a make-up assignment restores the academic credit for the missed week, but does not erase the absence from the student’s total number of absences. 2. Fourth and Subsequent Absences Beginning with the fourth absence of the semester, each additional absence will be treated as an unexcused absence, and no make-up assignment will be allowed. For the fourth and each subsequent absence: The student receives 0 attendance points. The regular weekly reflection may not be submitted. No make-up assignment may be submitted. The student receives 0 out of 6 points for that week. An additional 5 points will be deducted from the final course grade for each such absence. Accordingly: Fourth absence: treated as the first unexcused absence; 0 out of 6 points for that week, plus a 5-point deduction from the final course grade. Fifth absence: treated as the second unexcused absence; 0 out of 6 points for that week, plus another 5-point deduction from the final course grade. 3. Minimum Participation Requirement A student who accumulates five or more absences during the semester will receive a failing grade for the course. The first three absences continue to count toward the total number of absences even when the required make-up assignments have been successfully completed. In short: The first three absences may be fully made up. If a make-up assignment is not completed, the student receives 0 out of 6 points for that week. Beginning with the fourth absence, no make-up is allowed and an additional 5 points are deducted for each absence. Five total absences result in a failing grade for the course. IV. Final Group Oral Presentation The Final Group Oral Presentation is worth 20 points. Students will form groups according to the course requirements and present their final project or learning outcome. Evaluation will be based on: Quality and development of the topic Depth of thought Group collaboration Interdisciplinary connections Oral presentation The Final Group Oral Presentation is worth up to 20 points. V. Individual Final Learning Reflection The Individual Final Learning Reflection is worth 10 points. At the end of the semester, each student must submit a handwritten reflection of at least 300 words reviewing their learning experience throughout the course. The reflection may include: The most important things learned during the semester Changes in the student’s perspectives or understanding The most memorable course content Questions that remain unresolved Suggestions or feedback regarding the course The reflection will be evaluated based on completeness and depth of reflection and is worth up to 10 points.
