COURSE OVERVIEW Digital technologies have become an integral part of language teaching and learning, transforming how learners access information, interact with others, and develop language skills. In an era marked by rapid advances in Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), immersive virtual environments, mobile technologies, and data-driven learning, language educators must move beyond simply learning how to use digital tools and critically examine how technology can support meaningful language learning. This course explores both established and emerging digital technologies and their applications in second and foreign language (L2/FL) education. Adopting a pedagogy-first perspective, the course examines how digital technologies can mediate language learning processes, learner interaction, collaboration, autonomy, and identity development. Drawing on key theories and frameworks in Second Language Acquisition (SLA), Sociocultural Theory (SCT), Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), and Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK), students will critically evaluate the affordances and limitations of various technologies and their roles in language education. The course is organized around four major themes. The first theme reviews the historical development of technology-enhanced language learning and the theoretical foundations that guide technology integration. The second theme focuses on the application of digital technologies to support language skills development, including listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation learning. The third theme examines online, mobile, and immersive learning environments, including computer-mediated communication, virtual learning spaces, and emerging technologies such as virtual reality and artificial intelligence. The final theme explores contemporary issues and future directions in technology-enhanced language learning, including ethics, digital equity, learner privacy, and current research trends. It is expected that by the end of the course, students will be able to 1. Explain major theories and concepts related to technology-enhanced language learning. 2. Identify and evaluate commonly used and emerging digital technologies for language teaching and learning. 3. Analyze the affordances and limitations of digital technologies in different language learning contexts. 4. Demonstrate the use of selected digital technologies for language teaching, learning, and assessment. 5. Design pedagogically sound technology-enhanced language learning activities and lesson plans. 6. Critically review and discuss research on digital technologies in language education. 7. Examine ethical and practical issues related to the use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence in language learning. 8. Develop a technology-enhanced instructional project or research proposal for language education.
