This course explores the making of modern East Asia through the lenses of critical historiographical turns, archipelagic thinking, and the politics of embodiment. Moving beyond nation-centered narratives, the course examines how empire, colonial modernity, and shifting spatial imaginaries shaped lived experiences across Taiwan, Japan/Okinawa, Korean Peninsula, Hong Kong, and the wider Pacific world. This course consists of three sections: (1)Archipelagic Turn, (2) Bodies under Empire (3) Spatializing East Asia. We begin by situating postwar intellectual transformations within the broader “cultural turn” in historical studies, drawing on Geoff Eley and debates on colonial modernity. The course then develops an “Archipelagic Turn,” engaging with the Black Atlantic, Pacific Rim discourses, and critiques of area studies to reconsider East Asia as a fluid, interconnected space rather than a fixed geopolitical entity. The second section “Bodies under Empire” investigates how imperial power operated through hunger, health, reproduction, and racialization. Topics include starvation science and geopolitics, eugenics and total war, colonial governance in Taiwan and Hong Kong, and the Okinawan experience of the “Cycad Hell.” Here, the body becomes a crucial site where empire materializes through regulation, deprivation, and survival. The final section “Spatializing East Asia” brings the course into direct dialogue with its central themes of empire, body, and spatial politics. Rather than treating war as a discrete event, this section examines how imperial power reorganizes space—through caves, camps, and infrastructures of confinement—and how these spaces, in turn, shape embodied experience. From the caves (gama) of Okinawa to prisoner-of-war camps in Southeast Asia, we explore how landscapes become technologies of survival, coercion, and memory. Engaging with the idea of a “liquid” East Asia, the course ultimately approaches the region not as a fixed geopolitical container but as an archipelagic formation—an interconnected yet fractured field shaped by imperial mobility, displacement, and contested spatial orders. By tracing the entanglement of bodies and spaces under empire, this course invites students to rethink East Asia as a dynamic configuration of power, movement, and lived experience. 本課程以批判史學轉向、群島思維與身體政治為線索，探討現代東亞在帝國與戰爭條件下的歷史構成。課程超越國族中心敘事，檢視殖民現代性與空間想像如何形塑台灣、日本/沖繩、朝鮮半島、香港及太平洋區域的歷史經驗。第一單元「群島轉向」以文化轉向與殖民現代性辯論為起點，透過 Geoff Eley、Tani Barlow 與 Arif Dirlik 的討論，反思「區域」概念的形成與限制。在此基礎上本課程建立「群島轉向」的視角，將東亞理解為流動且相互連結的知識生產與權力空間，而非固定的地理框架。 第二單元「帝國下的身體」探討帝國權力如何透過飢餓、健康、生殖與種族化等機制運作。議題包括飢餓科學與地緣政治、優生學與總動員戰爭、台港殖民治理，以及沖繩「蘇鐵地獄」所反映的身體、種族及治理議題；探究身體如何成為帝國支配與動員的核心場域。 第三單元「空間化東亞」關注東亞政治的地景與秩序，分析戰爭時期至戰後亞洲的權力地景如何在洞窟、「營」與拘禁場所中重組。從沖繩戰的gama (ガマ)到台灣、東南亞的戰俘營，本單元探討空間如何成為壓迫、生存與歷史記憶共存的場所。透過「液態東亞」的視角，本課程最後將「東亞」延伸為一種群島式的空間政治線索，提供探索當代知識生產與權力形構的新視野。
先修科目或先備能力： (1) This course is taught primary in English. While students are encouraged to present and to participate in discussions in English, it is not compulsory. Chinese and English are both acceptable. 使用中文進行課堂報告須提供英文報告大綱及英文簡報檔 (2) Japanese reading skill is NOT required. Reading materials in Japanese will be introduced by the instructor.

Evaluations will be made according to 1-2 Presentations ＆amp; comments or questions: 30%, in-class participation: 30%, and term paper with at least one related topic introduced in this class: 40%. Term paper word limitation: 4,000-6,000 words in Chinese or 3,000-5,000 words in English.
